We're excited to introduce a brand new, tall 6th gear set for Porsche 986/996 and other V8 conversion gearboxes. The 0.625 48:30 ratio turns your 6th gear into a dedicated highway gear for keeping engine speeds down - particularly important for those running the G86/20 6 speed transaxles alongside a non-Porsche engine, such as an LS swap.
With a factory 6th gear and factory 9:31 3.444 ring and pinion you will see engine speeds of around 3250 rpm at 80 mph.
Keeping your factory ring and pinion and replacing the 6th gear with the new tall 0.625 6th gear, you can expect engine speeds to drop down to 2300 rpm for 80 mph. To further drop engine speeds, we recommend combining the new tall 6th gear with our 10:30 3.000 ring and pinion. You can expect engine speeds to come down to around 2000 rpm at 80 mph.
We are offering a package deal on the tall 6th and and the 3.000 ring and pinion at 10% off their individual price.
For those looking to shorten 1st through 5th, but wanting to retain a highway friendly 6th gear, you can pair this gear set with the 4.000 ring and pinion. The tall 6th with a 4.000 ring and pinion will retain the effective "factory" 6th gear ratio, while shortening the other gears. This combination will yield a taller 6th gear than a factory combination, as 80 mph is around 2700 rpm.
We have a fantastic Gear Calculator and Chart tool on our website that can help you find the gears and ring and pinion ratios for your application. To get you started, we've put together several gear charts for the 986/996 gearbox right here.
